1/28/16 12 Colorful Rules that Shaped Our World

“12 Colorful Rules that Shaped Our World”

Thursday, January 28, 7:00-8:15pm, Eaton Hall 112, SPU

Twelve rules explain why certain colors appear and disappear in different forms of art. These same rules shaped the paths life could take as it developed in a logical order. These rules work in locations as diverse as the blue waters of Mono Lake, the deep-sea vents called white and black smokers, Saturn’s orange moon Titan, and your own kitchen (whichever color it happens to be). Each rule is illustrated by a DIY home experiment, and the rules are explained in more detail in Ben McFarland’s book A World from Dust: How the Periodic Table Shaped Life (Oxford University Press), illustrated by Gala Bent and Mary Anderson. The public is invited.
